Mont St Michel

The village of Mortain sits on a high ridge above the valley of the Cance and affords stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Attractions include wonderful hiking and cycling trails, the Grande Cascade/Petit Cascade (perfect for relaxed walking, picnics and further views of the local area), Abbaye Blanche (featuring art and sculpture exhibitions by regional and local artists), and the Church of Saint-Evroult. Both of these attractions miraculously escaped the battles of August 1944 when American forces disloged the defending German Seventh Army.

Another must see is the Chapel of Saint-Michel (Le Petit Chapel) which marks the highest point of the village and offers beautiful walking trails and views as far afield as the famous Mont Saint Michel. The village contains all amenities i.e. bars, restaurants, banks, cash machines, petrol station, news agent (selling English papers), and other small enterprises.

The local area also contains a wealth of attractions and activities:

Domfront – boasts an outstanding historical heritage, superb old town and an 11th - 12th century church with stunning mosaics.

Saint-Hilaire – is renowned for its excellent river fishing, lakes and lively Wednesday morning market.

Vire – contains feudal castle ruins, a 15th century bell tower, riverside location, and numerous tempting food shops selling local and regional products.

St Sever – is a pretty village set on the edge of a large forest steeped in WW2 history which can be discovered by following the signed walk.

Villedieu Les Poels - is renowned for it copper products and workshops which are open to the public.

Mont St Michel – the famous abbey is the must see of the region along with its quaint streets, museums, walks, and stunning views.

Avranches – reveals a rich history, excellent restaurants, gorgeous gardens, the beautiful Normandy coastline, and beaches of Genet, Vains, Carolles and Jullouville where the adventurous can go sand yachting.

Mortain is situated in an ideal position for further exploration of not only the Normandy region, but also Brittany and the Loire, with Bayeux, Caen and the D-Day Beaches, Alençon, Dinard, Dinan, St Malo, Fougères and Rennes all being within reachable distance.
